Hurricane Sandy

I see that it's starting to hit shores now and that it's expected to last almost two full days.

Stay safe Priesties and the best to you and your families!

See you on the other side.

Heard from my work. We are shut down for next 2 days, no idea what may be there for us come Wednesday. Last wind storm that came through we had no power at work for a week.

Be nice if I had vacation time to use, no work no pay.

I know for most it just sounds like a small hurricane, but we do not see this kind of thing, and it has a potential to do a lot of damage. There is talk about the oceans meeting the bays again down on the barier islands, mandatory evacs. We are as ready as we can be.

Yeah they were saying that even if this stayed under a Cat 1 that it would still be extremely devastating. PLUS it's a Full Moon and tides are stupid high as it is.

So far record for lowest pressure ever recorded north of the outer banks, historic record in Atlantic City is 9 feet and they are calling for 9 and a hall. We are still 12+ hours out and we already have some rivers near flood stage.

We still have power but have been told to expect to lose it for an extended period. I may have to get my elderly inlaws if they lose power. We at least have gas to cook. Last track has eye passing 20 miles south of me.

Looks like landfall near Atlantic City around 6pm. Marker bouy off shore in AC has seas at 20 feet.

I am hopeful any friends I have living at the shore are safe.

We were extremely lucky. Had power fluctuations for about an hour as the eye passed. Still waiting for it to get light enough to go out and see if there is any damage. Over 1.2 million in my area of NJ without power. edit, 2.4 million state wide, 7.5 million in all 3 states, Down the shore they got crushed. No word on my in laws shore house.

Relatives in Staten Island New York barely got out last night. No warning to evac. The just managed to get out of the house with water flooding in. They are ok. Their house is unknown

We had some water in basement but fortunately sump pump was running. My sisters house had some water coming in a basement window.

I had a big branch fall on garage from 3 houses down the steet. No damage. Roof looks good. Heard some guy while I was getting coffee saying what a lot of hype for some wind and rain. I wanted to go all ANGRYORC on him. Instead older lady behind me told him

You young man are a f-ing ( she used the full word) idiot. There are millions of people without power, some have lost their homes, and a few have lost their lives. Please just get out of here before I tell you what I really think.

:) man I love the ladies of New Jersy. I bought her coffee and newspaper for her, and held the door for her on the way out. She told me thank you young man. Glad to see there are still some gentlemen in the world.

I told her no, thank you. Well said.

Heard from a family friend. The shore house had over 2 1/2 feet of water inside. It moved a full size refrigerator from the kitchen to the living room. Everything will have to be thrown out. Going to be a long winter of weekends repairing all of the damage.

I wanted a break from doing daily quests, but not like this. Hope that everyone else affected by Sandy is high and dry and safe.

edit.

Picture of the main road leading to the house during the storm.

I ended up doing well, only lost power for about 30 minutes and no damage to anything important. Plus I got to work from home for 3 days which is awesome :)

One of my friends in Jersey is still without power though and apparently some parts of Manhattan got majorly rolled.

Currently looks like we will need to take down lower 4 feet of drywall throughout the house, all carpets, furniture, beds, appliances, washer dryer, and probably even the lower kitchen cabinets are heading for the trash. We also need to have the electrical, heater, plumbing, gas and sewer line checked. Won't know if there is any structural problems until we open up the walls.

But looking at pictures of other homes in the area we are the lucky ones. Some people lost everything, homes, businesses, but fortunately at least there was no loss of life near us, the local police did a fantastic job getting everyone out, and are now patrolling even the lagoons for looters.
