New to Priest

Postby Iniu » October 20th, 2012, 6:19 pm

I'm not a long time player to WoW, as I've only been playing since Cataclysm, so I'm not too knowledgeable of all the jargon and terms that fly around. What I can say is, I played a Resto Druid. I enjoyed being the healer in the dungeons I ran. I created a Pandaren yesterday, and chose a Priest to do healing again.

The only problem I have is, I have no idea how to go about being a Healer as a Priest. With the Talent System changed and all, I'm really lost. Any help you could give me? It's all appreciated.

The 5 man information should be fine for the current patch. Unless something has drastically changed from beta that I'm not aware of, aside from PoM and PoH buffs.

The AA/Spirit Shell change has been reflected in my Disc guide.

Hi. Jumping onto this thread instead of creating another with the same concerns. I made a new panda priest with Mists and took her disc. She's my first ever healer. I'd heard of this site from the WoW Insider article and thought I'd come check you out. I read the beginner priest guide as well as the Disc guide and the 5 man dungeon guide. All were very helpful. Unfortunately, a lot of it went over my head because my priest isn't high enough level yet to have learned certain spells.

I've been leveling my new priest through dungeons almost exclusively alongside a guildie monk tank. We hit level 60 this weekend. I've yet to have anything close to a mana issue, so I'm worried that I'm forming bad habits. In fact, I had the dps call me out for making the tank "go slow" when I had plenty of mana because I wasn't comfortable healing through crazy pulls.

As the new spells trickle in, I see that they're dependent on the priest casting harmful spells instead of just healing/shielding the tank/group. In my experience, whenever I take the time to switch off the tank and cast Smite/Holy Fire/Penance, the tank gets in a rough spot and has to burn his cooldowns to keep himself alive while I struggle to switch back to him and restore his health. I like Penance for that instant, channeled heal, but when I've used it to dps for Evangelism/AA, things tend to get hairy. Are there tips on how to weave in those damage spells to get and maintain Evangelism stacks, without sacrificing tank health? Should I not be using Penance to dps at all and only be casting Smite/Holy Fire?

For the dps in the group, I usually just throw a Renew on them and figure that'll be sufficient unless there's a reason they'll start taking damage. Then I'll use Prayer of Healing if it's everyone, or a Greater Heal if it's just them. I don't have Prayer of Mending yet.

I'm also having a horrible time remembering I have things like Inner Will and my shadowfiend and all those other spells that aren't heals. Unless the spell icon flashes at me (like Archangel does), I forget to use it. Any tips for how to remember they exist and use them would be much appreciated.

For tracking spells I personally recommend Weak Auras. I make an icon that shows the spell available off CD on my UI. Or I make some sort of indicator for when I don't have Inner Fire/Will up. There are many more you can use, including OmniCC which works well on the default UI. More here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1715

If your tank is taking too much damage that you can't Smite or Penance a mob, then your tank might have some issues with mitigation at that level tbh. In any case, never Atonement heal if a player is in dire need of direct healing. At the very least you should have Glyph of Holy Fire and be using Holy Fire on CD to build stacks of Evangelism. Learning to balance Atonement vs. non-Atonement heals can be a challenge at times, but its good to learn so you can make use of Archangel as needed.
